Where Better Function Starts.

Personalized orofacial myofunctional therapy focused on improving oral function, breathing, and overall well-being.

Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy is similar to physical therapy for the muscles of the face, mouth, and tongue. It focuses on identifying and improving improper or inefficient patterns of muscle function that can affect breathing, chewing, swallowing, oral posture, sleep and overall oral function.

Through targeted exercises and neuromuscular re-education, therapy works to establish healthy patterns and support proper function of the tongue, lips, jaw, and facial muscles.

What Is Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy?

Myofunctional therapy may be beneficial when the muscles of the tongue, lips, jaw, and face are not functioning or coordinating properly. These patterns, known as Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs), can affect breathing, oral posture, swallowing, and overall oral function. Through an in depth evaluation, we identify areas of dysfunction and determine whether myofunctional therapy may be appropriate for you.

Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders may include one or a combination of:

  • Mouth breathing or open mouth posture

  • Low or forward resting tongue posture

  • Tongue thrust swallowing pattern

  • Oral habits, such as thumb sucking or nail biting

  • Difficulty maintaining proper lip seal

When Is Myofunctional Therapy needed?

You may benefit from an evaluation if you have:

  • Mouth breathing or an open-mouth posture

  • A low, forward, or otherwise improper resting tongue posture

  • A tongue-thrust swallowing pattern

  • Difficulty keeping your lips comfortably closed at rest

  • Oral habits such as thumb sucking, finger sucking, or nail biting

  • Jaw tension, clenching, or other jaw-related concerns

  • Snoring or other sleep-related concerns

  • A history of orthodontic treatment or orthodontic relapse

  • A known or suspected tongue restriction
